Are you wondering how to study for the National MFT Exam?
Studying for the MFT licensure exam can be a daunting task. The key to success is to start early, plan your study time, and use expert, high-quality practice materials.
The exam consists of 180 questions and candidates are allowed 4 hours. The exam categorizes questions using the following six content areas:
- The Practice of Systemic Therapy
- Assessing, Hypothesizing, and Diagnosing
- Designing and Conducting Treatment
- Evaluating Ongoing Process and Terminating Treatment
- Managing Crisis Situations
- Maintaining Ethical, Legal, and Professional Standards
Start by reviewing the most recent Candidate Handbook, which can be found on the AMFTRB website, to familiarize yourself with each of the six content areas and how heavily each area is tested on the exam. The next step is to take a timed, full-length practice exam, to determine your strengths and opportunities for improvement. Use the information from this practice exam to put together a daily study plan.
Here are some additional tips to help you get started:
- Make a study schedule and stick to it.
- Get organized and create a study space that works for you.
- Your study time should include both timed and untimed practice. Untimed practice should focus on building concepts, analyzing the structure of the question and answer choices, identifying why each of the incorrect answers is wrong, and making sure you understand the rationale behind the correct answer choice. Timed practice gives you the chance to test yourself and build your test-taking stamina.
- Understand your strengths and weaknesses in order to focus your studying accordingly.
