The ASWB Clinical Exam Contains 170 Multiple-Choice Questions

The Association of Social Work Board (ASWB) administers the Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW) examination. Candidates who wish to practice clinical social work are required to pass the ASWB Clinical Exam. Social workers who have passed this exam and met the licensure requirements may hold the following licenses: LCSW, LICSW, CSW, or others.

The ASWB Clinical Exam contains 170 multiple-choice questions. Only 150 of these questions are scored, while the remaining 20 questions are being tested for inclusion in future exams. Candidates have 4 hours to complete the exam. This exam is designed to test the core skills and knowledge necessary for competent, clinical Social Workers.

In order to be successful in passing the ASWB Clinical Exam, it is important to review the content that will be tested. The exam will cover foundational knowledge from the following domains:

• Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment
• Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Planning
• Psychotherapy, Clinical Interventions, and Case Management
• Professional Values and Ethics

Next, it is important to familiarize yourself with the types of questions that appear on the exam. Many of the questions will present realistic clinical scenarios and ask the candidate to assess the client’s presentation, identify treatment goals, potential barriers to treatment, and mandated reporting requirements. When considering how to answer situational questions, recall the skills and fundamental competencies of being a social worker while providing insights as if you were dealing with an actual client.
