The Social Work Clinical Exam

The LCSW Exam can be daunting, but with time, hard work, and the right materials, success is achievable! Before you begin studying, it’s important that you understand what will be covered and put together a study plan to guide you through the process.

The LCSW Exam contains 170 multiple-choice questions. Only 150 of these questions are scored, while the remaining 20 questions are being tested for inclusion in future exams. Candidates have 4 hours to complete the exam. This exam is designed to test the core skills and knowledge necessary for competent, entry-level Social Workers.

The exam covers the following domains:

• Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment
• Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Planning
• Psychotherapy, Clinical Interventions, and Case Management
• Professional Values and Ethics

To prepare for this exam, first take the time to put together a study plan. This plan should incorporate content review (reading materials, audio, flashcards), as well as question-based practice. Once you have completed most of your content review, it is time to take full-length practice exams. As important as it is to take practice exams, don’t forget that the greatest value comes from reviewing and analyzing your results afterwards.
